More About Peru Missions
Renew Church Waco’s mission to Vina Del Rey in Chincha, Peru centers around the following five ministry areas:
Medical Clinic: The medical team is led by medical professionals from either the United States (if there are qualified team members) or from Chincha. The medical clinic addresses common family medical issues with emphasis on women’s and children’s health. Many pre-natal and children’s vitamins are distributed daily. Medical personnel provide each patient with instructions and advice addressing common daily health care and hygiene issues.
Dental Clinic: The dental clinic is also led by professionals from the United States or Chincha. As clean water is scarce, dental care is a critical need. Due to the overwhelming number of people seeking care, the dental team will only perform extractions to alleviate pain and to prevent infection. Preventative care in the form of fluoride treatment is provided to many children as well. Education and distribution of toothbrushes are critical areas.
Optical Clinic: The optical clinic provides new reading glasses as well as reconditioned prescription glasses for patients with distance impaired vision. The Lions Club provides previously used prescription glasses which have been reconditioned for use in underserved areas, such as Chincha. While an optical professional is generally not on the team, a simple device called a focometer is utilized to obtain a patient’s prescription. The focometer does not require any measurable training to operate effectively. In fact, a novice, after a short lesson, is able to provide a patient with a measurement within an acceptable range thus enabling a patient to obtain a pair of reconditioned glasses appropriate for their use. What a joy to give Peruvians the gift of eyesight!
Construction Team: There is always a construction project underway for the mission teams to assist with, as progress never stops. The typical tasks involved are fabrication, digging, laying rebar, pouring concrete, and painting. We build on to a school or a church.
English Language Instruction: This team generally consist of high school age team members who spend the morning hours interacting with Peruvian students undertaking English language instruction in the schools Vina del Rey has created. This ministry allows both team members and Peruvians the opportunity to share about one another’s background, culture and faith. For many areas of the world, command of the English language is critical to accessing greater education and resource.
